The Stivers House
The Judge Bertram and Joan Stivers house, on Charlie Sizemore Road just off Greenbriar Road in Manchester, is thought to have been built in 1834. Beneath the weather boarding, huge logs run the length of the house, making it an extremely sturdy structure. Known as the William Reid house prior to being purchased by the Stiverses, it may have been built by Reid's father, James Washington Reid, an early salt maker and county judge who was married to Sophia Garrard, sister of famed Brigadier General T. T. Garrard. One account has it that the house was built by T. T. Garrard's father, Daniel. J. W. Reid is buried in the Reid Cemetery near the elegant old home. The late Bertram Stivers, and his wife, Joan, are the parents of Speaker of the Kentucky Senate, Senator Robert Stivers of Manchester.
